PROJECT: Temperature maintenance for packaging production
Keeping the boxes moving
The site: Challenge Packaging Factory, East Sussex
Heat Mat's own packaging supplier required a fast and cost-effective solution to preventing glue solidifying in a dispenser. The vessel holding the glue, used for securing packaging and feeding a large machine, was becoming too cold overnight, causing a serious delay in box production and reducing profitability. The Sussex based packaging firm uses a specialist glue to secure thousands of boxes, on a daily basis, making the vessel dispensing the glue an essential part of the production process. Each morning, production operatives were finding the glue had solidified and time was being lost bringing the glue up to temperature with a fan heater.
The system:
Challenge Packaging approached Heat Mat, to devise an urgent solution for maintaining the temperature of the glue. The system needed to be flexible and allow for potential movement during maintenance, without the need to involve an electrical engineer to disconnect it every time. Following a site visit and consultation, Heat Mat specified an industrial Trace heating system, to provide on-going temperature maintenance. Heat Mat specified a self-regulating cable and a specialist 13A thermostat, that is ready-to-go with a plug fitted as standard, and a sensor underneath. Controlling the system is easy and the thermostat fitted was a cost-effective, fast-to-fit solution, providing flexibility to the production team on the factory floor by allowing them to unplug and move the thermostat during periods of machine maintenance. The self-limiting cable ensures the vessel holding the glue is kept at the correct temperature, when production begins each morning. The temperature maintenance system has prevented the glue solidifying on a daily basis. The cost of installation was a fraction of the cost, to the business, of production being delayed.
